Concrete or metal fence — an honest comparison
Wrought iron, slats or sheet metal — a metal fence needs paint and rust protection, and most types do not hide the yard. A precast concrete fence needs no painting, comes with a 15-year warranty and has a price per linear metre published on the website. Metal is the better choice when the yard should remain visible.
A metal fence has to be painted and protected from rust; a concrete fence needs no painting and comes with a 15-year warranty. If you want the yard to be visible from the street, metal is the better choice. By “metal fence” people mean three different things: wrought iron, slats made of steel profiles, or solid sheet-metal panels. What they have in common is steel.
Wire mesh fencing is a separate topic: concrete fence or wire mesh fence.
What types of metal fence are there and how do they differ?
Wrought iron and railings hide nothing — the yard can be seen from the street. With slats, it depends on the gap between them. A solid sheet-metal panel blocks the view, but the sheet is thin and light. With all three types, the metal is mounted on a concrete plinth or between concreted posts, so here too there is no getting around excavation and concrete for the foundation.
Which fence needs more maintenance?
Steel rusts wherever the protective coating is damaged — at welds, cuts and scratches, and at the bottom edge where water collects. Hot-dip galvanising and powder coating delay the problem but do not eliminate it: damaged spots have to be cleaned and treated, and ordinary paint has to be renewed every few years.
With concrete there is nothing to renew. The colour is in the material itself — grey for the standard panels, white for the premium panels, which we cast from white Portland cement and marble aggregates. The panels withstand frost, moisture and sun. The fence requires practically no maintenance — no painting and no yearly repairs.

Which one gives better protection from prying eyes and noise?
Of the three types of metal fence, only solid sheet metal blocks the view. The thin sheet, however, does little to muffle noise, and in strong wind and rain it makes noise itself.
A concrete fence is a wall. A panel measures 183 × 30 × 4–5 cm (thickness depending on the relief) and weighs 46–61 kg depending on the model; the rows sit one on top of another in the grooves of the posts, with no gap between them. Such a fence screens the yard from the street and muffles noise. For most models the height is 150, 180 or 210 cm.
If you like an openwork fence but not the painting, have a look at the Aero Line series — Lights, Avalon, Visio and Space. These are concrete panels with openings or slots: light passes through, and there is no paint.
How do they cope with wind and impact?
A solid sheet-metal panel is a large area with little weight. The wind loads it like a sail, and the entire force is taken by the screws or rivets that hold it in place. Over the years the fixings loosen and the sheet starts to vibrate. A ball or a fallen branch leaves a dent that is hard to straighten.
A concrete fence holds by its own weight and its foundation: the standard posts are 285 cm, of which 80 cm are concreted into the ground. The panels are reinforced — they do not bend and cannot be cut with pliers or tin snips. After an impact only the affected panel is replaced: the panels above are lifted, the new one goes into the place of the old one and the rows are put back.
Which fence works out cheaper?
It depends on which metal fence you are comparing with. Thin sheet metal is cheap to buy. Wrought iron and custom-made fences are handcrafted: the workshop sets the price according to the kilograms of metal and the complexity of the design, and on top of that come the foundation, the posts and the painting.
With us, the price is public and per linear metre: from 32 to 129 €/m depending on the model, height and colour. The lowest figure is the industrial price — it applies to fences longer than 200 linear metres, in grey and in white; for shorter fences the model’s regular prices apply. For 18 of the 22 models the price is the same: in grey 48, 56 and 63 €/m, in white 79, 92 and 104 €/m — at heights of 150, 180 and 210 cm respectively. Prices are excl. VAT and cover the elements; transport is stated in the quote, and installation is quoted separately, on request. All prices are in the models and prices section, and how to get from the price per metre to the final total is explained in the article how much a concrete fence costs per linear metre.
With metal you keep paying after installation: paint, rust treatment, replacing bent elements. A concrete fence has a service life of over 50 years, and the warranty is 15 years — with a warranty card and a certificate of conformity.
How long does it take to build the fence?
A custom metal fence goes through measuring, the workshop, installation and usually painting on site; the timeframe is set by the contractor. Our fence arrives ready from the factory. Our installation crew pours the foundations, concretes the posts and stacks the panels; a typical fence is ready in 2–3 days with the ground prepared and the materials delivered. The steps are described in the article how a precast concrete fence is installed.
When is a metal fence the better choice?
A metal fence is the better choice when you want the yard to be visible from the street or when the property has a view. In that case you do not need a solid wall.
Often the most sensible solution is a mix: a solid concrete fence along the side boundaries and at the back of the property, where privacy matters most, and a lighter, openwork section facing the street.
How do you request a quote for a concrete fence?
Browse the gallery to see finished fences, and send us three things via the contact form: the length of the fence, the desired height and a few photos of the site. You usually receive a quote for the elements and transport within 4 working hours; if you would like installation, once you confirm the quote we also prepare an installation quote for your site.
