Concrete fence or mesh fence — which to choose

Fence mesh is cheaper to buy, but it does not screen the yard, and painted mesh needs care every few years. A concrete fence screens the yard, needs no painting and has a 15-year warranty; its price per linear metre is public.

If the fence only needs to show where your property ends, mesh is enough. For privacy you need a solid wall. Mesh is cheaper to buy; a concrete fence needs no painting and has a 15-year warranty.

What mesh offers and what a concrete fence offers

Fence mesh marks the boundary. The whole yard can be seen through it.

Concrete panels make a wall: the yard cannot be seen from the street, and noise is muffled. Our standard panel is 183 × 30 × 4–5 cm (thickness depending on the relief) and weighs 46–61 kg depending on the model; fence heights are 150, 180 and 210 cm. For Douglas and Cedar the panel is 200 × 40 × 4–5 cm and 77 kg, and the fence is 160 or 200 cm; for Stacked Stone the panel is 200 × 50 × 4–5 cm and 82 kg, and the fence is 150 or 200 cm.

Price at purchase and costs afterwards

Mesh is almost always cheaper at purchase.

Metal corrodes wherever the coating is damaged — by cutting, impact or abrasion — and faster in high humidity and polluted air. From then on you pay again and again — for paint, for rust treatment, for straightening or replacing bent elements.

Once installed, a concrete fence is not painted and is not treated against rust.

How much our concrete fence costs

Prices start from 37 €/m. For 18 of the 22 models the fence in grey costs 48, 56 and 63 €/m — at 150, 180 and 210 cm respectively — and in the white premium version 79, 92 and 104 €/m. The full range is 37–78 €/m in grey and 61–129 €/m in white. The industrial offer covers four of the models, in grey and in white, for fences over 200 linear metres: 32–93 €/m; for shorter fences the model's usual prices apply. Prices are excl. VAT and are for the elements — panels and posts; transport is stated in the quote, and installation is quoted separately, on request. The models are on the fences page, and their prices by height in the price list.

Maintenance: paint or colour in the concrete itself

Painted mesh has to be inspected, repainted and protected from rust every few years. Galvanised and PVC-coated mesh is not painted, but damaged spots in the coating have to be treated.

Concrete has no coating to renew. The colour is in the material itself: grey for the standard panels, white for premium — made with white Portland cement and marble aggregates. The back of the panel is unfinished; if you wish, it can be skimmed with adhesive and fibreglass mesh at any time after assembly, but this is not required.

The warranty applies provided the fence is not treated with unsuitable materials — for example oils, or cement in the joints between the panels. The full terms are in the warranty card.

Privacy and a sense of security

Through mesh you can see everything: the yard, the car, the children, the front door.

The solid panels are stacked with no gaps; at 180 or 210 cm the yard cannot be seen from the street. A panel weighs 46–61 kg and sits in the channels of the posts, which are set in concrete 80 cm into the ground.

How the fence copes with wind and impacts

Mesh holds as long as it is well tensioned and fixed. Once it slackens, it starts to flutter in the wind and becomes bent over time.

A concrete fence stands by its own weight and its foundation. The posts are 285 cm long, 80 cm of which are in the ground; above 210 cm we switch to reinforced 310 cm posts — with them a fence of 183 × 30 panels reaches 240 cm, 8 rows. We lay the foundation either on individual footings of about 40 × 40 × 80 cm — the cheaper option, in which the first row of panels is sunk 5–10 cm into the ground — or on a continuous plinth of about 20 × 70 cm, when the ground is unstable or sloping. The details are in the assembly method.

The panels are made of reinforced concrete with 42.5R Portland cement. We have been casting them since 2011 in our own factory in Măgurele near Bucharest, in three covered halls.

Warranty and documents

The warranty is 15 years for all fences, including the industrial offer; you receive a warranty card and a certificate of conformity. The expected life of the fence is over 50 years. Our fences stand on sites of Glavbolgarstroy, at the Balgarska Armia stadium, at Carrefour, and at Mega Mall in Bucharest — there the fence is 240 cm high on reinforced posts.

When mesh is the more sensible choice

Where you do not need privacy. A large agricultural plot where what matters is keeping the animals in. Temporary fencing of a construction site. A place with a view you do not want to close off.

For a yard around a house, mesh is usually temporary: later it is replaced or built over. Then the cost is incurred twice — first for the mesh, then for the fence that stays.

How ordering a concrete fence works

You send us the length of the fence and a few photos of the site. Usually within 4 working hours you have a quote for the elements and transport; if you would like installation, once you confirm the quote we also prepare an installation quote for your site. The deposit is at least 20%. The balance is paid before each delivery — the value of the delivery minus the proportional part of the deposit; with a single delivery, the whole balance at once, before the fence leaves the factory. The assembly itself of a typical fence — a few dozen to about 100 linear metres — takes 2–3 days with prepared ground and the materials delivered; for longer fences the timeframe is stated in the quote.

We also work in winter: production runs all year round in the covered halls, and we install at temperatures above −5 °C on ground free of snow.

The remaining questions about timeframes, ground and payment are in the frequently asked questions. For a specific estimate — the contact form.
