A fence on sloping ground — what the solutions are

A precast concrete fence can also be installed on a slope. When single footings are enough, when a plinth is needed, how each bay is levelled and what the assembly cost depends on.

On sloping ground, a precast concrete fence is installed in steps, and the foundation is chosen according to the soil: single footings on stable ground or a strip plinth on unstable ground.

Why the fence does not follow the slope

The panel is a finished concrete element: for most models 183 × 30 × 4–5 cm (thickness depending on the relief), while for Douglas, Cedar and Stacked Stone it is 200 cm long. It is rigid and cannot “follow” the terrain: it does not bend or tilt to match the slope. That is why, on a slope, the fence is divided into level sections.

How is a fence installed on sloping ground?

In steps: each section between two posts stays level, and the transition to the next level happens at the post. The panel length sets the rhythm of the steps — with standard posts, one bay is 1.90 m for the 183 cm panels and 2.07 m for the 200 cm ones. The fence height is chosen from the standard 150, 180 or 210 cm (for Douglas and Cedar — 160 or 200 cm, for Stacked Stone — 150 or 200 cm).

Before assembly, the drop of the ground across each bay is calculated. Then each bay is levelled separately — this way no gaps are left under the panels and the steps come out even.

The foundation: two options

On a slope, the foundation is also stepped or of varying depth depending on the ground. The options are the same two as on level ground.

Single footings (approx. 40 × 40 × 80 cm)

The cheaper option. The posts are set in concrete in separate footings, and the first row of panels is sunk 5–10 cm into the ground. Sufficient for stable soil and a moderate difference in level.

Plinth — strip foundation (approx. 20 × 70 cm)

For unstable soil and a greater difference in level. The plinth connects the post footings and takes up the difference in levels along the entire fence line.

The posts

Standard posts are 285 cm, of which 80 cm go into the foundation; for fence heights above 210 cm, reinforced 310 cm posts are used. The stages of the work are described on the “How we work” page, and the two options are compared in detail in the article single footings or strip plinth.

Common mistakes when installing on a slope

A foundation poured uniformly along the whole line, as if the ground were level, is among the most common mistakes: on a slope, the foundation follows the levels. The other common mistake is installing “by eye” — without levelling each section, the fence comes out crooked.

How to choose the solution for your site

We look at two things: how much the ground drops along the fence line and what the soil is like. So describe the slope in your enquiry and send a few photos in which it is visible.

What affects the assembly cost

Assembly is quoted separately, on request. Its cost depends on the plot; on a slope it also includes the stepped foundation and the levelling of each bay. What matters most:

  • access to the property and the possibility of unloading close to the fence line
  • the height of the fence, i.e. the number of panel rows
  • the type and volume of the foundation — single footings or a plinth
  • the soil structure
  • the availability of water and electricity on the plot
  • local prices of cement, aggregates, reinforcement and formwork for the foundation
  • the urgency of the order and other particularities of the site

You usually receive a quote for the elements and transport within 4 working hours; if you want installation, after confirmation we also prepare a quote for it, according to the site. A typical fence — a few dozen to around 100 linear metres — is installed in 2–3 days with a prepared site and the materials delivered; for longer fences the time is stated in the quote. Durability and element prices

Built correctly, a fence on a slope lasts as long as one on level ground. The panels are cast in three covered halls, with 42.5R Portland cement, and have a service life of over 50 years. The warranty is 15 years for all fences, with a warranty card and a certificate of conformity.

Element prices range from 37 to 129 €/m excl. VAT depending on the model, height and colour, and include the panels and posts; transport is stated in the quote. For fences longer than 200 linear metres, Liner, Simple, Rain Guard and Stacked Stone also have an industrial price — from 32 to 93 €/m, in grey and in white. See the prices of all models.
